Tongues & Prophecy
- 1 Corinthians 14:1-5
- Josh Akin
The issue of tongues, and the supernatural outworking of the Holy Spirit today, draws a dividing line across Christianity. Many Churches, like ours, see the Spirit doing still today what we read of in scripture, and those churches are multiplying steadily, especially in Africa, and South America; while other churches languish. Today’s study will help us understand why.
Tongues, that is a Christian’s spirit praying in a language unknown to that person, is practiced differently throughout Christendom, but you will find very much of it sincere, but some of it mis-educated. When I was in college, I hadn’t been to church in a very long time, so I thought it would be good for my soul to go to church. So I went to the yellow pages, “Let’s see who has the biggest ad? Well, this looks like a lively church.” And so I showed up one sunny Sunday morning to find, literally, people running around the room, people falling backwards and shaking like they were being electrocuted, and the sound of barnyard animals, but there were no animals, I don’t think. I am as confused now, as i was then. I did not venture to another church for years.
But eventually I found myself at a Calvary Chapel gathering where many were praying and waiting on the Holy Spirit, and it was wholly edifying, and emboldening. It was decent and orderly. There is a Biblical way, and unbiblical way; one that glorifies man, another that glorifies Christ. Today we will discover it together.
